All kinds of emotions as Lagos State Task Force boards up Alade Market

,

Saturday July 16 was a gloomy day for the traders at Alade Market as they were forced to pack their belongings. Despite the fact that traders knew this day was coming, most were not ready. As the State’s task force alighted and started boarding up the market, traders hurriedly moved their belongings to wherever convenient they could temporarily store their belongings which altogether was estimated in the billions of Naira.

At the Bureau De  Change section of the market, the Lagos State Task Force encountered resistance as the roofing sheets used to board up the market were being removed immediately by the traders. Traffic on Allen Avenue side of the market was also hectic as trucks waiting to load goods and trade fixtures parked on one lane of the two lane road. However, there were heavy presence of police and LASTMA  to defuse traffic and temper.

Traders have up till Sunday July 17 to move all their belongings. Already as night time approached,   it was eminent that some hoodlums were hanging around to loot whatever left over merchandise they could get their hands on.

According to reports, action of the task force was in compliance with the deadline given the traders by the state government after they were asked to relocate to a new site. The traders complained the new site is not well laid out and lack parking spaces and roads. One of the traders who talked under anonymity felt the state  government want to dump the market in a canal in other to build a more expensive market that most traders could not afford as with the case of Tejuosho Market.
